Tire: AltiMAX Arctic
Category: Studdable Winter / Snow
UTQG (treadwear): None
You know how some tires are pretty much just for A to B transportation? Well, that is not exactly the case for this guy, that is, unless you live somewhere in Siberia. The AltiMAX Arctic is a very specialized tire used for winter and particular snowy situations. It has the ability to be studded with metal studs, which means you actually put little pieces of metal into the tire, and this has the awesome ability to get you great traction on ice and snow.
An important safety disclaimer here is that General Tire recommends that you only install these tires in sets of four. That is so your vehicle will have consistent traction across all the wheels. I've had friends in the past just install two winter tires on their drive wheels, but I can't recommend that. You'll end up sliding into a ditch or worse, just like they did.
In this particular performance category, the AltiMAX is definitely in my top three. Drivers report that they don't wear down very fast, so expect to get many seasons of use out of them. I've seen reports that sets of these tires will last 60,000 miles, which is really great for winter tires. Overall this is a great tire for the money and I'd recommend it if you live in a place with lots of snow and ice, where you'll need good traction all winter.
